I am a 35-year-old who receives Social Security Disability (SSDI). A few years ago, due to mental health, I became homeless. I moved in and out of shelters which only magnified my mental health issues. Medicaid expansion allowed me to get health insurance, and I was later able to receive SSDI. While Medicaid and SSDI helped me get off the street and heal, my benefits still only allow me to just scrape by. SSDI helped me break the cycle of homelessness, but it is a struggle to get through every month on $733. SSDI is a crucial insurance for millions of workers, and it needs to be protected and expanded.
