I am a 70-year-old teacher from Oregon and am now retired in Seattle. While I receive a pension, it only covers a portion of my expenses, so I rely on Social Security to cover the gap. Even though pensions are a contract, legislatures throughout the country attack pensions. My pension has been cut, making Social Security even more crucial for my retirement security. Social Security and Medicare are critical tenets of retirement security for workers and families. In an age when state legislatures look to pensions as piggy banks, we need the promise of Social Security and Medicare to be protected and expanded.
