Austerity could kill me

Eugene Lim, Chicago. Lim graduated from college in 2009 and has only been able to find low wage work, including with a retail employer where he faced wage theft and unpredictable work schedules. He now works part-time as an educator for a social service agency that serves adults experiencing homelessness. His job is threatened by the state budget impasse in Illinois, which has its roots in austerity measures. He has used Medicaid since 2013 for healthcare access but worries that it and other public programs benefiting the poor are threatened by the logic of cuts, corporate tax breaks, and privatization.
